๐ Overview
Research II (PCR_AI) examines the structural relations through which representations are constituted before they reach a recipient, treating representation itself as the central analytical object rather than the model, the platform, or the user in isolation.

"The program's commitments are reported as specified, not as established: this repository presents an architecture and a research protocol, not findings."
๐๏ธ Conceptual Architecture (v0.2 โ Adopted)
The architecture distinguishes five functional units, defined by function rather than by institutional identity, ownership, or technical component:
| Unit | Function |
|---|---|
| Producer | Originates or supplies representational material |
| Model / Generative System | Transforms inputs into a representation |
| Platform / Controller | Governs conditions of production, presentation, availability |
| Distribution Interface | Determines how representation reaches recipient |
| Recipient / Consumer | Receives and engages with representation |
Five foundational distinctions:
Production โ Control
Control โ Distribution
Distribution โ Reception
Function โ Owner
Governance โ Execution
โ๏ธ Authority Structure (v0.2 โ Adopted)
The Authority Structure distinguishes five authority types and establishes that authority is analytically distinct from function โ a function is what is done; an authority is the right to do it.
| Authority | Central Question |
|---|---|
| Production | Who has the authority to originate? |
| Transformation | Who has the authority to modify? |
| Selection | Who has the authority to decide what is shown? |
| Distribution | Who has the authority to determine access? |
| Interpretive | Who has the authority to present an interpretation as authoritative? |
๐ Representation Lifecycle (v0.2 โ Adopted)
The lifecycle traces the path of a representation through six structural stages:
| Stage | Description |
|---|---|
| 1. Origination | Representation constituted from material |
| 2. Transformation | Representation modified or regenerated |
| 3. Selection | Representation included in/excluded from presented set |
| 4. Distribution | Representation made available (or restricted) |
| 5. Reception | Representation reaches recipient |
| 6. Re-origination | Recipient produces new representation |
Canonical path:
Origination โ Transformation โ Selection โ Distribution โ Reception โ [Re-origination โ โฆ]
The canonical path is analytically clean, empirically rare, and useful as a baseline. It is a reference point, not a norm.
Five alternative paths: Merged, Skipped Transformation, Skipped Selection, Distributed Origination, Iterative Re-origination.
โ Research Questions (v0.2 โ Adopted)
Twenty questions across four families:
| Family | Questions | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| A โ Conceptual | RQ-A1, RQ-A2, RQ-A3 | The analytical categories themselves |
| B โ Authority | RQ-B1 โ RQ-B6 | The distribution and exercise of authority |
| C โ Lifecycle | RQ-C1 โ RQ-C5 | The paths and interruptions of representations |
| D โ Boundary | RQ-D1, RQ-D2 | Relation to Research I and methodological scope |
๐ฌ Methodological Scope (v0.2 โ Adopted)
Mixed Methods: Document Analysis (primary) โ Case Study (secondary) โ Comparative Analysis (tertiary).
| Approach | Role | Systems |
|---|---|---|
| Document Analysis | Primary | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity |
| Case Study | Secondary | ChatGPT |
| Comparative Analysis | Tertiary | All four systems |
Timeline: 10โ14 weeks (Phase 1: 4โ6, Phase 2: 3โ4, Phase 3: 3โ4).
๐ Literature Review (4 Stages)
| Stage | Focus | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | Categorical positioning (16 categories ร 5 traditions) | โ Completed |
| Stage 2 | Reference-level verification (56 references) | โ Completed |
| Stage 2b | Targeted verification of Distinct categories | โ Completed |
| Stage 3 | Synthesis draft (Section 2) | โ Draft complete |
Conclusion: Research II's architecture is primarily integrative (11 Reorganized, 4 Redundant, 1 Distinct). Only L6 (Re-origination) remains genuinely distinct.

โ ๏ธ Scope & Limits
What Research II supports:
- Structural analysis of AI-mediated representations.
- Five-function architecture with five foundational distinctions.
- Five-authority structure separated from function.
- Six-stage lifecycle with canonical and five alternative paths.
- Twenty research questions across four families.
- Open manuscript (CC-BY-4.0) and open code (MIT).
What Research II does not support:
- Empirical findings (no data collected).
- Causal claims (descriptive structural analysis only).
- Integration with Research I (RQ-D1 deferred).
- 52 DOIs remain unverified.
Design philosophy. Research II is a research protocol, not a predictive model or policy tool. Its purpose is to specify an architecture precise enough to be tested against actual AI-mediated systems โ not to make forecasts or normative claims.
